Where Azari Foundation uses grants, the process should be proportionate to the value, risk and nature of the work. This page describes principles rather than announcing an open grant round.
Fit with Foundation priorities
A grant should address a problem within the Foundation’s approved focus and have a credible connection to intended outcomes.
Alignment with a broad theme alone is not sufficient.
Partner capability
Assessment should consider governance, programme experience, financial management, safeguarding, leadership, local legitimacy and the practical capacity to deliver the proposed work.
Requirements should be proportionate and should not automatically exclude smaller organisations with relevant capability.
Clear use of funds
Budgets should connect to activities and responsibilities.
Restrictions, permitted costs, procurement expectations and reporting requirements should be understood before funds are released.
Monitoring without administrative excess
Reporting should produce information useful for oversight and learning.
The Foundation should avoid asking partners to generate large volumes of material that no one will use.
Changes and close-out
Material changes should be discussed rather than hidden.
Close-out should address outcomes, finances, outstanding commitments, records and lessons for future work.
